Bughouse Chess Regulations
Official Rules for DUO Championship
🎮 Game Basics
- Team Play: Bughouse is played with four players forming two teams of two players each
- Board Setup: Two standard chessboards are set up side by side
- Color Assignment: Each player on a team plays opposite colors (one plays White, one plays Black)
- Simultaneous Play: Both games are played at the same time
♟️ Piece Transfer Rules
- Captured Pieces: When you capture an opponent's piece, give it to your partner
- Piece Conversion: Pawns change color when transferred (opponent's pawn becomes your color)
- Dropping Pieces: Your partner can drop transferred pieces on their board instead of making a regular move
- Drop Restrictions:
- Pawns cannot be dropped on the 1st or 8th rank
- Pieces can be dropped on any empty square (following pawn restriction)
- Dropping a piece counts as your move
- You cannot drop a piece to give check (except knights)
⚡ Winning Conditions
- Team Victory: A team wins when either player checkmates their opponent
- Individual Game: If one player loses, their partner must win for the team to succeed
- Time Management: If a player runs out of time, their team loses immediately
- Stalemate: Results in a loss for the stalemated player's team
📋 Communication & Conduct
- No Verbal Communication: Partners cannot discuss strategy or give advice during games
- Piece Transfer Only: Physical transfer of captured pieces is the only allowed interaction
- Waiting for Pieces: You may wait for your partner to give you a piece before moving
- Fair Play: No coaching, signaling, or strategic communication between partners
🎯 Tournament-Specific Rules
- Touch-Move Rule: Standard FIDE touch-move rules apply
- Illegal Moves: First illegal move results in time penalty; second illegal move loses the game
- Disputes: Tournament arbiter's decision is final
- Board Arrangement: Teams sit across from each other (Partner A vs Opponent B, Partner B vs Opponent A)
